Building Hope and Tearing Down Walls

When people look at who I am now, they see a strong fighter who stands up for the things in which she believes, and they see someone who is successful and influential. Those who have read my newest book, though, know that my life has not always been easy. In addition to being born in a refugee camp and being denied basic human rights, I have also faced many other situations that made me feel lost and hopeless, but I refused to give up on my dreams.

Although my will to survive and thrive allowed me to break past the traps and pitfalls that tried to hold me back, I could not have done it alone. The programs made available by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency gave me the required tools to become the woman you see today. Sadly, not everyone who grew up in refugee camps was as lucky as I have been. I spend a lot of time, energy and resources to help those who can’t help themselves, serving as an example to this generation and letting them know they can achieve anything to which they set their minds.

Despite everything the UNRWA has done for those who need help the most, the U.S. government recently decided to cut their funding by 34 percent, and the act will prevent a lot of people from getting assistance and moving forward with their lives. I have always believed that the world will be a much better place when we all work together and support each other. Without the UNRWA, you would have never heard my name, and I would have likely faded into the shadows as another statistic.

Looking back on my life so far, I am proud of the accomplishments I have made and the people I have helped. No matter how hard I try, I can’t do everything on my own. If you agree that people should stand together and improve everyone’s quality of life, I ask that you offer your support to the UNRWA and the values they uphold. Every donation they get makes it a little easier for them to save lives and help refugees get a voice, which is something everyone deserves.

Too many people have already turned their backs on Syrian refugees, but we can’t just stand still while lives and families fall apart. The next great doctor, inventor or scientist could be hidden among the cries for help that many people are quick to ignore. By supporting the UNRWA, you are helping to knock down walls and give hope to those who would have otherwise been forgotten.

Please help UNRWA to give those refugees some of their dignity back. #dignityispriceless
